Today was the first day of the Mechanisms program. I met all the students who will be working on research papers this summer and I met all the TAs that will be available to help us throughout the process of writing our research paper. We spent some time listening to the TAs introduce themselves and the research projects they are currently working on. Then we got to pick which TA we would like to be our mentor. Each mentor would have a group of about 6 people that would meet together at least once a week to talk about our research progress. I picked Anusha as my mentor because she was very passionate about her research and enthusiastic. |

This is the day that the disease research paper is due. For the past few days I have made a lot of adjustments to my disease paper. Two days ago I was really struggling on what else to add for the mechanisms portion of the paper. So I talked to Anusha and she suggested that I look more in depth into the mechanisms and transporters used by the virus to enter the cell. Then I struggled even more on finding different articles that explained the mechanisms of cell infection and piecing them all together. In the afternoon we went to OSU to visit the lab that Anusha works at. We met her Principal Investigator (PI), Dr. Raj and looked at the effects of nucleoside transporter drugs on pancreatic cells under the microscope. I learned so much about what it is like to conduct research at an actual lab. Visiting Anusha’s lab was a nice break from working on my research paper. But after that I went home and continued to work on the paper. I kept adding more information about the body’s immune system’s response to the virus and finally submitted the paper at 11:59pm! |

After finally finishing the disease research paper, we had to work on the making the power point to present our research. It was easy making the power point because I just had to put abbreviated versions of the main ideas of my paper onto the slides. The only difficult part was finding pictures to match what I am presenting about. We had class today too. Before class, I had to conduct smaller research on the mechanisms of nucleoside transporter drugs and the types of cancer that it treats. I felt that this was much easier to research because I had become more experienced at conducting research after finishing my paper. In class, I presented my research on nucleoside transporter drugs as a practice for the bigger presentation next week that I will be giving over my Enterovirus 71 research. |
